"Parmi les nouveautés musicales, le folk de Ben Howard qui s'assombrit sur un 2e album très réussi, le métal hurlant et revigorant de Slipknot et le chant langoureux de la violoniste Karen Brunon.

Après un premier album nominé au prix Mercury, Ben Howard, 27 ans, approfondit une atmosphère particulière à la frontière entre folk lumineuse et pop-rock britannique plus nerveuse et sombre dans "I forget where we were".

Le musicien anglais, souvent comparé pour sa voix à David Gray ou Damien Rice, livre un deuxième album très travaillé où les guitares - plus électrisées que dans son premier opus - et la batterie déroulent un tapis brodé pour sa voix.

Sa manière de jouer de la guitare, pinçant, piquant ou tapant les cordes comme sur "In dreams" ou le jazzy "She treats me well" fait son originalité.

Le temps de faire respirer la musique

Ben Howard n'hésite pas non plus à offrir 10 titres longs, qui permettent à sa musique de respirer. Preuve en sont les 8 minutes de "End of Affair" qui commencent par une guitare sèche des plus calme avant qu'une rythmique soutenue et une réverbe ne les envahissent.

Grâce à une sensibilité musicale et poétique, Ben Howard raconte un monde fragile et difficile ("Small Things", "Rivers in your mouth", "I forget where we were"), avec une lueur d'espoir.

Ben Howard, qui avant de devenir musicien avait entamé des études de journalisme, a bel et bien sa place dans le panthéon des musiciens folk."
